This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and share your personal information when you use our Service. We are the data controller for your personal data. Information from third parties

We use Firebase (Google) to provide authentication, data storage, analytics, crash reporting, and push notifications. Firebase may collect device identifiers and usage data as described in Google’s Privacy Policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy).

When you search for a location, we send your search query (not your personal data) to OpenStreetMap’s Nominatim service to retrieve place names.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your personal information to:

  • Create and manage your account
  • Display your profile and group to other users for discovery and matching
  • Enable group voting, matching, and group chat
  • Send push notifications and (if opted in) email notifications
  • Keep the Service safe — including reviewing reports and enforcing our Community Guidelines
  • Improve, maintain, and debug the Service
  • Comply with legal obligations

We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

4. How We Share Your Information

We share your information only in the following circumstances:

With other Greets users. Your public profile (username, first name, age, gender, bio, nationality, photos) is visible to other users. Group profiles are visible to users in the discovery feed. Chat messages are visible to members of the relevant chat.

With service providers. We use Firebase and Google Cloud to host and operate the Service. These providers process data on our behalf under data processing agreements. Google may process data in the United States and other countries.

For legal reasons. We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or government request, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Greets, our users, or the public.

In a business transfer. If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before your data is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

We do not share your phone number, date of birth, or contact email with other users.

5. International Transfers

Your data may be processed in countries outside the UK, including the United States, where Firebase/Google Cloud servers are located. Where we transfer data outside the UK, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place, including Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

6. Data Retention

We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. When you delete your account, we will delete or anonymise your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it by law or where data has been shared with other users (e.g. messages you sent in a group chat, which remain visible to other chat members).

Crash logs and aggregated analytics data may be retained in anonymised form indefinitely.

7. Your Rights

Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:

Rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate data

Erasure — ask us to delete your data ("right to be forgotten")

Portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format

Object — object to processing based on legitimate interests

Restrict processing — ask us to limit how we use your data

Withdraw consent — where we rely on consent, withdraw it at any time

8. Children’s Privacy

Greets is intended for users aged 16 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If we become aware that a user is under 16, we will delete their account and data promptly. If you believe a child under 16 has created an account, please contact us at Support Email.

For users aged 16–18, we apply additional care consistent with the ICO’s Age Appropriate Design Code, including keeping date of birth private and limiting public visibility of personal information.

9. Security

We use industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS), secure authentication via Firebase, and access controls on our databases. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes through the app or by email at least 14 days before they take effect. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent version.
